  GMC publishes report on deaths during investigations - GMC (gmc-uk.org) GMC publishes report on deaths during investigations  Published 3 March 2022 The General Medical Council has published a   report on doctors who have died while under investigation or during a period of monitoring . The  data  shows that sadly 29 doctors died while under GMC investigation or monitoring over the three-year period 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2020. The cause of death of 20 were from natural causes; six were of external causes, of which five were confirmed as suicide; and three were from unspecified reasons. The data, which will now be published on an annual basis, has been introduced following a new process for obtaining and recording the cause of death of doctors who die while they are in the regulator’s fitness to practise procedures . The General Medical Council (GMC) commissioned and accepted an independent report from Sandra Horsfall, which was published in 2014. Fitness to practice procedures are very stressful, often lasting up to 5 years. It has been suggested that these disciplinary procedures are so badly handled that they may be an independent risk factor for doctor suicides. The General Medical Council, while accepting the report proposed resilience training for medical students.   Doctors who commit suicide while under  GMC fitness to practise investigation  Internal review  Sarndrah Horsfall, Independent Consultant   14 December 2014  Executive summary  Introduction  This report was commissioned by the GMC to review those cases where doctors have committed suicide while under the fitness to practise procedures between 2005 (when the GMC introduced electronic data systems) and 2013. The aim was to establish whether the GMC’s processes could be improved to reduce the impact on vulnerable doctors and whether there is more the GMC can do to prevent these tragedies from occurring.
